I learned that from Clara about a year ago. She was the sixth person at my aunt’s crochet club I had visited that Sunday afternoon, going from house to house trying to make a sale. The scene varied little from one house to the next: a living room decorated with dozens of small ceramic animals; a husband grunting at a TV set in the next room; a low wooden table with a white crochet tablecloth; a steel tray with two giant mugs of strong coffee. And, as in every house, a couple of small, engraved silvers poons on the side, covered in brown rust stains. I was desperate for Clara to take the bait that day... Sirena del Nilo Nos saluda el majestuoso Nilo mientras intentamos huir de otra burbuja más, otro castillo de cristal que, aunque es lo que nos ha permitido llegar hasta aquí, nos aburre en su monotonía insípida. Atravesamos ésta y siete murallas más que nos separan del frío nocturno y del olor del río, tan lleno de magia, queriendo purificarnos bajo la luna creciente que ilumina a través de unas milenarias ruinas. Todo lo que queremos es sentir el palpitar de la ciudad, aspirar profundamente el aliento de sus calles y el sonido de sus gentes. Se nos abren las puertas poco a poco, no sin dificultad, para poder adentrarnos en la fortaleza; como una caravana de extranjeros a los que se les codicia y se les desprecia al mismo tiempo, pero a los que lentamente se les descubre como iguales, mientras nos quitamos pesadas máscaras y oscuros velos. Se escuchan entonces melodías desconocidas que provienen de un oscuro callejón del bazar. Al acercarnos, de la penumbra aparecen cientos de mano...

As published in Writer's Block Issue 46 , Summer 2021   Michael sits cross-legged on the guest room’s wooden floor, facing a white ar­chive box marked with a big neon MTV sticker. He had briefly seen it twice before: once, in 2008, when Caril moved into his small studio in downtown Albany, and then years later when they scaled up to this townhouse just outside the city. He had asked what was in it and on both occasions she said they were old memories from “before his time”, with a sweet smile. He never saw the box again until he found it at the back of the closet today. It had been four sleepless nights, searching for a clue that would explain something, anything, of why she was simply gone.
